2023 Honda HRV The redesigned subcompact SUV that will go on sale in the US this year looks different from the hybrid version of the European market.
Honda’s snowy teaser image for the redesigned 2023 HR-V could easily be mistaken for an illustration on a holiday card, but it’s our first look at the redesigned small SUV that will go on sale in the US later this year.
Honda has given its first look at the HR-V 2023 for the US market. The sketch shows the basic design of the subcompact crossover but doesn’t reveal much. Honda said the new model will go on sale later this year.
The new HR-V 2023 will replace the aging current-generation model that has been around since 2014. It doesn’t appear to share the body with the European-market HR-V hybrid that was revealed last year, suggesting that the US model will be bigger.
It could be based on the Civic platform, which would be a departure from the current model’s Fit-based foundation.
We suspect that the HR-V’s powertrain will also mirror the latest Civic, with a choice of 2.0-liter 2.0-liter and 180-hp turbo 1.5-liter inline-four engines.
A hybrid could join the lineup, too. Either front-wheel or all-wheel drive will be available, along with an automatic CVT. Any of these combinations would be a welcome upgrade over the HR-V’s low-powered 1.8-liter inline-four engine with just 141 horsepower.
Look for more details — and some real photos — to come in the next few months as Honda kicks off the 2023 HR-V in earnest.
Honda CRV Review: 2023 Honda CRV Redesign Looks Exclusive
To counter the onslaught of a desirable and stylish small SUV, Honda prepared a 2023 HR-V with a handsome redesign, and from the teaser images, we can see that it will look different from the version sold in Europe.
The previous generation was practical and offered good value, but the revamped model needed more curb traction and a more attractive powertrain to challenge the best in its segments, such as the Hyundai Kona, Kia Seltos, and Mazda CX-30.
A four-cylinder will remain the HR-V’s powertrain of choice, but we’re not sure if it will be the turbocharged or naturally aspirated type.
To maintain the model’s unbeatable versatility, we expected the second-row Magic Chair to create a repeating look; a modernized cabin with the latest technology is also expected to be part of the redesign.
Honda’s smallest crossover will be completely redesigned for the 2023 model year and is expected to debut in the spring.
2023 Honda HRV Rendering
Honda this week showed an artist rendering of the Honda HR-V subcompact crossover. The 2023 HR-V will continue to be Honda’s smallest vehicle and offer “enhanced versatility, style and performance; The new HR-V will have a greater role as an aspirational vehicle and gateway to the Honda brand,” said a Honda executive.
The HR-V will launch in the first half of 2022, as the 2023 model, followed by new versions of every Honda SUV except the Honda Passport. This year there will also be a new Honda Accord.
At Tuesday’s briefing, Honda also outlined its plans for electrification. It calls for the adoption of hybrid models soon, the introduction of EVs, and an upgrade to 100% electric by 2040. Some automakers say they will be fully electric by 2035 or sooner.
Honda had no plans to use plug-in hybrids as a bridge to full electrification, and it dropped the company’s only plug-in electric and fuel cell vehicle, the Honda Clarity.
Based on a pair of renderings released by Honda, the car looks slimmer and more aerodynamic than the second-generation, 2016-2022, Honda Fit, which measures 170 inches long and has an EPA0 rating of 30 mph overall.
The HR-V 2023 will likely continue with Honda Magic folding seats. In addition, the flat-folding configuration allows for one large cargo space and seating for two, the bottom of the second-row seats fold down, like a cinema seat, allowing for carrying tall items such as bicycles or plants in an upright manner.
The HR-V is also expected to get newer technology including driver assistance. The HR-V currently has adaptive cruise control and lane keep assist, but only on the top two trim lines.
There’s no blind-spot warning, instead, the 2022 Fit offers the Honda LaneWatch, a rear-facing camera that displays a passenger-only rear view in the center stack view, and the driver measures location based on three lines indicating safe, careful, or not-changing lanes.
Honda notes that even in the last year of the HR-V’s current life, it was the leading seller in the subcompact SUV class with 137,090 sales, according to Market Intelligence, followed by the Subaru Crosstrek, Hyundai Kona, Nissan Kicks, and Kia. Soul.
All artist renderings show the car is slimmer and inferior to what’s being sold, so it’s unclear how much of a visual change there will be in 2023.
Also TBD: Will the new HR-V use the core design of the 2022 Honda Civic, Forbes Wheel Sedan of the Year for 2022, which is about 10 inches long? And will the Civic use a 158-horsepower and 180-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder engine? The outgoing HR-V limps at 141 horsepower and is built on the chassis of the now-defunct Honda Fit hatchback.
But, as Honda notes, it’s enough to sell more than a more valuable vehicle like the Subaru Crosstrek.
Honda never went all-in on a plug-in hybrid, which provided 10 to 50 miles of battery power before switching to a petrol engine. Honda is ending production of the plug-in and hydrogen fuel cell Honda Clarity sedan but with enough stock to be available until 2022.
According to Jessica Fini, senior PR manager for Honda in the US, “It is important to remember that when you talk about electrification, the goal is not to change what powers the vehicle, from internal combustion to the battery, but our goal is to achieve it.
Carbon neutrality, of our entire business.” Honda notes that it has the highest average fuel economy and lowest emissions of any full-line manufacturer, which leaves the likes of Tesla behind.
Honda plans to present a new EV, the Honda Prologue 2024, next year or early 2024. The car will use GM’s Ultrium battery technology. Later Honda EV will use Honda battery technology.
2023 Honda HRV Design
Honda has released a holiday card-style winter stretch of the redesigned 2023 HR-V. Compared to the HR-V 2022, the front of the HR-V 2023 is more aggressive and has a more distinctive lower fascia.
The 2023 HR-V’s grille features an S-shaped mesh pattern. Additionally, the hood is lower, and the headlights have a more square shape.
For the rear of the HR-V 2023, the redesigned crossover slides down a steeper slope compared to the 2022 model.
Additionally, the taillights are more curved, while the lower part of the rear bumper features a stylish body color scheme. Also, relative to the European version of the next-generation HR-V, the US HR-V 2023 appears to be larger.
As more information about the redesigned Honda HR-V 2023 becomes available, we will provide an update. This includes the debut date, official release date, pricing information with costs for each trim, engine specifications, fuel economy, color options, and a full list of features and technologies.
2023 Honda HRV Specs
One of the downsides of the 2022 HR-V is that its 141-hp 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine isn’t very powerful. To compete with its subcompact SUV competitors, the 2023 HR-V may offer a more powerful engine option, as Car and Driver explains.
This could come in the form of a Honda Civic’s 158-hp 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and a 180-hp turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine.
The next-generation European-spec Honda HR-V will be powered by the same hybrid powertrain found in the Honda Accord and Honda Insight. However, Honda hasn’t said whether to offer a hybrid version of the HR-V in the US or not
The gas-powered Honda Vezel G uses the newly developed 1.5-liter four-cylinder ‘L15Z’ engine that produces 87 kW (117 hp) and 142 Nm (105 Lb.-Ft.). The engine is mated to a CVT as standard, and it is the same unit used on the fourth-generation Honda Fit but with a lower gear ratio.
The 2022 Honda Vezel Hybrid X/Z/Play features an e: HEV hybrid powertrain that combines a 1.5-liter ‘LEC’ i-VTEC petrol engine and two electric motors. The engine produces 78 kW (105 hp) and 127 Nm (94 Lb.-Ft.), while the drive motor, internally referred to as the ‘H5,’ produces 96 kW (129 hp) and 253 Nm (187 Lb.-Ft.).
In Europe, Honda is selling the HR-V 2022 exclusively with the e: HEV hybrid system that combines a 1.5-liter i-VTEC petrol engine with two electric motors – a traction motor and a generator. The engine produces 79 kW (106 hp) and 131 Nm (97 Lb.-Ft.), and the traction motor produces 96 kW (129 hp) and 253 Nm (187 Lb.-Ft.) of torque.
Honda says it has moved the HR-V hybrid power control unit from under the trunk (on the previous-gen) to the engine compartment and increased the number of Lithium-ion battery cells from 48 to 60. Sport, Normal, Econ, and B (more powerful regeneration) are available drive modes.
The all-new model is electric from the start, and when the engine is under high torque demand, it switches to hybrid power. At “higher and more constant speeds”, the gasoline engine is in charge of propulsion.
2023 Honda HRV SUV
Honda’s new subcompact SUV sketch made us want to see more. We were thrilled when Honda introduced the new Euro-market HR-V (known in some parts globally as the Vezel), but Honda quickly told us to calm down—it’s not a subcompact HR-V.
We’re looking for. The US, Honda told us, will accept the new HR-V in its way. Not to insinuate our friends at Honda, but whenever a car manufacturer tells us something like this—one of them thinks, not just Honda—we have to wonder if we’re not procrastinating.
Today, Honda released a sketch of the North American market for the 2023 HR-V (actually, they look like paintings, which is relatively cool). And no, we’re not procrastinating—it’s a different ride. Look at the back door, and what do you see? Door handle on the body.
The new Euro-HR-V/Vezel has rear door handles hidden in the door pillars, much like the current HR-V (and will be released soon). From what the painter shows, North America won the HR-V lottery, because if the original looked like that, it would be a much cuter creature than the HR-V returning to Europe. We love the big black grille—a bit like the Kia since former Audi designer Peter Schreyer tries to make all his Kias look like Audi.
It certainly looks better than the chrome confusion of the larger CR-V. (Honda has a new CR-V coming for 2023, and we hope it looks good.) Speaking of Audi (the old one, right?), the HR-V’s rounded rear bears some resemblance to that. according to the Audi Q3.
We hope the majestic exterior style is an indicator of what we will see inside. We prefer the HR-V, and we always thought a more glamorous version would suit buyers.
And what lurks behind that handsome skin? Honda’s two-sentence statement that accompanies the sketch isn’t much help. As a rule, we don’t copy and paste press releases, but we will make an exception, given the rarity of other news here: “Honda kicks off the Crossover Year by taking a peek at the all-new sporty and versatile model. 2023 HR-V.
The new HRV will launch in America North this year.” Okay, so that’s not forming information. If we had to guess — which, of course, we understand — we would predict that one of the new HR-V’s powertrains would be a 212-hp hybrid powertrain according to the Euro-market HR-V, based on a roughly 2.0-liter naturally aspirated engine.
We’re assuming there will be a non-hybrid version, and while we’re complaining about the HR-V’s current muted acceleration, it wouldn’t surprise us if the 1.8-liter engine was replaced with something a little bolder, perhaps a 2.0 engine. -the naturally-aspirated liter engine according to the entry-level Civic and (if we’re lucky) the 1.5-liter turbo Honda, also found on the spectacular new Civic.
The fact that the sketch shows the HR-V darting through the snow using a skateboard strapped to a roof rack suggests an all-wheel-drive option. That might seem like a no-brainer for an SUV, but don’t forget that some of the entry-level sport-utes (Toyota CH-R & Nissan Kicks, to explain 2) don’t show AWD; Today’s HR-V does show AWD.
Whatever the look of the last HR-V & whatever the configuration, this teaser has done its job: We’re excited to see for example what the real thing is.
We don’t need to tell you what the hot market segment is in the compact SUV field, which is full of new and reliable competitors such as the Toyota Corolla Cross, Kia Seltos, and our pick, the Subaru Crosstrek. We’re looking forward to seeing how the new Honda HR-V 2023 stacks up.

2023 Honda HRV Hybrid
Update: ‘HR-V, a significant model for Honda in North America’ is updated with the latest sales data.
Note – Visitors from North America can head to ‘USA & Canada to get a different version of the 2022 Honda HR-V’ from this story for the regional update on the Honda HR-V 2023.
The highly anticipated 2022 Honda HR-V (new Honda Vezel) will debut in Japan in February 2021. The new small SUV is equipped with the e: HEV hybrid system in almost the entire lineup in its first market, where it went on sale in April. 2021. A few months later, it was announced for Europe, there were only hybrids.
Inspired by the Honda SUV e: concept, the global 2022 Honda HR-V (code name: Honda NX) flaunts bold styling with a steeper rear windshield that makes it look sportier, with slimmer looking taillights further distinguishing the rear.
The all-new model looks athletic thanks to the coupe-esque styling that is taller at the rear and SUV-like from the upright front end and straight character lines. It’s impressive that the designers managed to balance the rugged SUV stance with the stooped, coupe-like appearance.
The 2022 Honda HR-V features a mix of traditional SUV designs and modern crossovers. It has a tougher front end featuring a noticeably larger hexagonal radiator grille, a higher-mounted inverted V-shaped hood, and sharper headlamps.
On the sides, the 2022 Honda HR-V has a larger greenhouse and a straighter roofline which generally increases outside visibility and headroom for rear passengers. The rear of the SUV looks very different from the front and sides. It has a dashing windshield for a sporty look typical of an SUV coupe. The rear combination cluster is sleek and connected like the headlights, giving the vehicle a bolder style.
The Honda HR-V has gone on a diet to free up space and looks calm. The slimmer dashboard makes a big contribution to this, and the stand-alone center display is next on the list. Repeat customers will appreciate the new dual-zone climate control panel with physical controls with a dial.
The side AC vent control comes with a similar but smaller knob which contributes to the minimalist theme while providing more comfort. The steering wheel and instrument panel look smaller than the old Honda HR-V.
Honda has used the newly developed rear seats on the 2022 HR-V and positioned them 30 mm (1.2 inches) further back. The company has provided an additional two degrees of tilt to the rear seats. The driver’s seat is 10 mm (0.4 inches) taller than the previous model, which should provide a better view of the road ahead.
Honda says that headroom is comparable to class standards and that the sedan-like seating position frees up an extra 35 mm (1.4 inches) of legroom. Shoulder room is claimed to be comparable to SUVs belonging to a higher class.
Honda HR-V 2022 is equipped with some new features to attract young and technology-savvy customers. On the outside, it has LED headlights with LED DRLs that double as LED sequential turn indicators, LED active cornering lights, 18-inch alloy wheels, the hidden rear door handles, a hands-free power tailgate with Walk Away Close function, and full width. LED taillight.
Key interior features include Air Diffusion System, 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay, wired Android Auto, OTA update, 7-inch TFT driver information display, wireless charging pad, touch-activated cab lights, and premium audio system. with an amplifier.
2023 Honda HRV Interior
The HR-V will likely adopt a more modern interior design with this new generation and maybe inspired by the newly redesigned 2022 Civic. Such an approach will give the HR-V interior a classic and attractive look.
The outgoing model offers Honda’s new Magic Seat, which allows the rear seat to be flipped over and folded onto a very low, flat floor. That feature helps the small HR-V lead the segment in cargo capacity despite its size.
All models will likely come with a touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. On the European version of the HR-V, the infotainment screen stands tall in the center of the dashboard and looks bigger than the 7.0-inch screen on the previous model. We’d expect conveniences like onboard Wi-Fi, SiriusXM radio, and on-dash navigation, at least as options.
The interior of the US-spec 2023 Honda HR-V will likely draw cues from the new Civic. A new spy shot on BurlappCar.com reveals a stand-alone touchscreen infotainment system like in the latest Civic and the global HR-V.
Honda could win North America if it included the Civic’s 10.2-inch all-HD digital instrument cluster. The Volkswagen Taos, which is the HR-V’s new rival in the United States, is available with a 10.25-inch virtual instrument cluster (Digital Cockpit Pro).
Small SUV customers in the US and Canada prioritize practicality over style. With the Fit discontinued in this key North American market, there was pressure on Honda to update a subcompact model that held up perfectly.
The revised HR-V for the US will likely feature a newly developed infotainment system with Google built-in.
Honda has confirmed that it plans to launch a future model in North America with an infotainment system that allows the use of Google services directly from the apps installed on it. Customers will be able to access Google Assistant, Google Maps and Google Play with native apps on the go.
Google Assistant allows sending text messages, receiving directions, and controlling the functions of vehicles, media, and compatible smartphone devices via voice commands. Using Google Maps via Apple CarPlay/Android Auto offers convenience, but can drain smartphone batteries.
It won’t happen again, thanks to the built-in apps. Google Play will allow downloading of apps, music, podcasts, and audiobooks to vehicles.
Overall we look forward to a cleaner and more modern interior design on the Honda HR-V 2023.
2023 Honda HRV Engine
In Europe, the HR-V will be powered by a hybrid powertrain borrowed from the Insight and Accord hybrid cars, but the company has yet to announce what engines it will find under the hood of its smallest SUV when it goes on sale in North America.
We hope that Honda will offer a more powerful powertrain in the next-generation HR-V — which could come in the form of a 158-hp 2.0-liter four-cylinder borrowed from the Civic .compact car; The Civic 180-hp turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder could also appear.
The outgoing HR-V never offered the quiet athleticism we’d expect from a modern Honda, nor did it provide a particularly supple ride over potholes, so we’re hoping for improvements in that area as well. When we get a chance to ride the new HR-V, we will update this story with driving impressions and test results.

There’s no word yet on the new HR-V’s fuel economy ratings, but the model that came out was so efficient it had a big shoe to fill. For more information on the HR-V’s fuel economy, visit the EPA website.

Honda has yet to announce an official release date for the All-New Honda HR-V 2023. However, it will go on sale later this year. The HR-V 2023 is likely to debut in late Winter/early Spring 2022, and production will begin shortly thereafter. As a result, the HR-V 2023 release date will likely fall in the fall of 2022.
The 2023 HR-V will be available for sale at dealerships across the United States and North America. In other countries, Honda will sell a different version of the next-generation HR-V, called the Vezel in some international markets.
2023 Honda HRV Price
Pricing information is not yet available for the HR-V 2023. However, given the redesign and feature enhancements, you can expect the HR-V 2023 to cost a bit more than the HR-V 2022.
Starting prices for the HR-V 2022 range from $21,870 MSRP for the LX trim. up to $26,670 MSRP for the EX-L trim.
The price for the Honda HR-V 2023 shouldn’t increase too much from the current model. Our recommendation for the midrange EX will likely carry over as well as we expect the trim to offer the best mix of features for the price.
As we learn more about the HR-V 2023’s pricing, features, and options, we’ll update this story with those details.
- LX $23,000 (est)
- Sports $25,000 (est)
- EX $26,000 (est)
- EX-L $28,000 (est)
