New 2025 Honda Accord Midsize Sedan Review: What We Know So Far

Posted on

2025 Honda Accord next generation is expected to arrive in early 2024. Sedans are not dead at Honda. The long-running Accord will live to see its eleventh generation, and these spy photos of the disguised test car offer our first glimpse of the new model.

The Honda Accord is a respectable mid-size sedan that gives off the impression of a luxury car which of course was launched with an elegant new design. The newest model looks sharper, more modern, and has better proportions than other models in its class.

While we’re sad that the powerful 2.0-liter turbocharged upgrade is gone, Honda assures us that the hybrid drivetrain is much improved, and the base 1.5-liter engine is carried over with tweaks for increased refinement and fuel economy. The lineup was reconfigured to emphasize hybrid models, as Honda targets the electric-fueled Accord to make up 50 percent of sales.

The nonhybrid LX and EX trim come with a revised 1.5-liter turbocharged inline-four and a continuously variable automatic transmission; horsepower and torque are the same as 192 horsepower and 192 pound-feet as before.

2025 Honda Accord Review

The next-generation Honda Accord 2025 has been a hot topic of discussion since it appeared for testing in late June. While the 11th generation is more of an evolution, many things will change, from the way it is designed to its powertrain.

2025 Honda Accord

While the spy test prototype is wearing full camouflage, we can always count on the Kolesa to accurately unwrap it and reveal what the production vehicle looks like. And here it is, the Honda Accord 2025 sedan, carded from the front and back.

The look is pretty simple, with a few straight lines on the sides and a Civic-like front-end design. While older Accord models seem to be looking to the future with insect-like LED lights, these almost resemble models from the late 1990s. This is an acknowledgment of the Accord’s long history and reputation in the midsize sedan market.

It was smart enough for Honda not to overcomplicate matters and point out something they couldn’t mass produce during a chip shortage.

The 2025 Accord model may be slightly longer than before with the upgrades largely increasing rear legroom and creating room for new hybrid technology.

At the rear, the sedan’s long sloping roof is topped off with taillights that wrap from one end to the other, creating a look very much like the Audi A7. Of course, the appeal of your car should depend on the trim level, among which there are several: LX, Sport, Sport Special Edition, EX-L, and Touring.

2025 Honda Accord Redesign

At first glance, the overall shape looks very similar to the current Accord. Sweeping lines with long, sloping roofs remain the order of the day. Thus, the sedan’s bones could be carried over to a new generation, but everything front and rear will be new.

It’s easy to see the slimmer headlights flanking the slightly larger grille overall. A clear bumper separates the grille from the opening in the lower fascia, and the hood looks flatter. The front overhang of the front wheel appears shorter too.

Moving to the rear, we think the current model’s C-shaped taillights and reflectors will give it a slimmer lens. The carved body on the trunk lid looks a lot like today’s Accord, but it could be a fake panel designed to confuse curious onlookers.

We can see more faux panels on the doors, so while this prototype appears to be sporting a basic camouflage wrap, there’s some trickery going on underneath.

We can see the sedan’s proportions haven’t changed much, if at all. The wheelbase looks the same, and if the next-gen Accord does feature the current platform, at least some of the engine options will likely carry over. Currently, you can own the Accord with a choice of turbocharged four-cylinder engines, starting with a 1.5-liter engine that produces 192 horsepower.

New Honda Accord Engine

The current Accord is known for adopting Honda’s new VTEC Turbo engine, which will also be available in the next generation. For the base 2024 Accord, you still have 1.5 liters, although power should be increased from 192 to 200 hp. Meanwhile, the 2.0L Turbo which has won all those races is nominally rated at 252 horsepower. That’s the model they tested because it had a split exhaust and front intercooler (see video).

Honda has stated that it intends to make hybrids a larger share of the sales representation of the next-generation Accord as the company wants about half of its total sales to be hybrids on popular models such as the CR-V, Civic, and Accord. Previously, Honda had made hybrids more of a specialist job with Insight and Clarity, but that decision appears to be reversed.

We may even have an Accord plug-in, though sales will be limited. As you probably know, it’s really hard to buy something like a Prius or RAV4 Prime right now due to a shortage of supplies. China may even have a fully electric Accord, which explains why the trunk is so high.

The model we wanted was the Accord Type S 2024 with the high-output K20C1 engine of the Civic Type R and the Acura gearbox. This will be great competition for the Camry TRD, which is rumored to be quite spicy in the future (GR Camry with Lotus V6).

2025 Honda Accord Hybrid

The 252-hp 2.0-liter engine is an upgrade, and there’s also the Accord Hybrid using a non-turbocharged 2.0-liter with an electric motor for a combined 212 hp. Additional electric options are likely, although they may not appear at the initial launch.

By the way, Honda has confirmed the next-gen Accord Hybrid will debut after the new CR-V Hybrid. We know the CR-V is coming later this year as a 2023 model, so it’s reasonable to expect the Accord to follow soon after. Currently, we are targeting an early 2024 debut for the 2025 model year.
